The first step for how to prepare your home for an electric vehicle charger is to decide what level of charging you’d like for your domestic electric vehicle charging station. Currently, there are two levels of charging for residential charging stations. These include:
Clear a spot for your vehicle that’s near a plug. Make sure to remove clutter in order to reduce the risk of a fire hazard.
If you plan to install a Level 2 electric vehicle home charger, you’ll need to outfit your garage with a 240V power outlet that’s wired directly to your power panel. That power should be rated for 100 Amps. Most newer homes feature compatible power panels, but if you own an older home, you may need to upgrade your power panel.
You’ll need to hire an electrician to install your 240V outlet and have it wired to your power panel. This should only cost a few hundred dollars; however, if you need to upgrade your power panel, it may cost between $1,000 and $3,000. Fortunately, there are numerous Federal and State incentives to help you offset the cost!
