Why Is the Chevy Bolt Being Discontinued?

Considering the popularity of the model, it’s surprising at first glance that the Chevy Bolt EV is being discontinued. That’s especially true when you consider that sales are at an all-time high. So why, then, is GM leaving the Bolt behind? Here are just a few reasons:

• The chemistry and design of the Bolt battery cells are outdated. The main Bolt factory is designed to efficiently build vehicles on the Bolt platform, but new Chevy and GMC EVs are built on the more contemporary Ultium battery platform. To cut costs and streamline production, Chevy is phasing out the old platform to solely focus on the production of vehicles on the new Ultium platform.
• The Bolt has primarily been manufactured at a factory in suburban Detroit, which is being revamped to build the upcoming Silverado and GMC Sierra EVs on the Ultium platform.
• Although the Chevy Bolt sold 70,000 models in 2022 (record sales), it never sold as well as initially projected. Chevy is starting fresh with sportier Ultium EVs. The Bolt, in its current state, won’t be able to compete with upcoming models like the Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Silverado EV, and GMC Sierra EV, many of which are expected to fall into similar price brackets.
• There were numerous recalls issued for the Bolt battery, due to battery fires, so GM is doubling down to phase out the old design.
